Practical guide: How to browse safely?

We will never be completely safe from malicious people who want to steal our identity or our bank accounts. But we can make it harder for them. So here are our tips to stack the odds in your favour!

Look for the padlock icon in the search bar or the URL starting with HTTPS.

Never compromise via a computer or a public wifi network

Public Wi-Fi is unsecured, so it's much easier for people with bad intentions to intercept your transactions and gain access to your online information. So whether you're shopping for clothes or logging in to your bank, wait until you get home!

Use secure passwords
  1. Vary your passwords. If you always use the same one, you make it easier for the bad guys to do their work.
  2. Avoid passwords such as 1111, 1234, birthdays (yours or your children's), your pet's name, your address, your phone number, etc.
  3. When creating a new password, use your browser's suggestions. They are very strong and save you from having to use your imagination to create a secure password.
  4. Phrases as passwords are a good idea! Use mnemonic tricks and turn them into passwords.
Worried about forgetting your passwords?
  • Consider using a password manager. It allows you to store all your passwords in a centralized system and automatically enter them into the required fields when necessary. You will only need to create and remember one password.
  • If you prefer to write down your passwords on paper, ensure that you keep them in a discreet and secure location within your home.
Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible

Yes, it’s an extra step to log into your accounts, but you’ll be glad you did when it saves you from fraud or social media hacking!

Do not underestimate the importance of antivirus software

Install it and update it as needed.
