Chargeback request template

Chargeback is a procedure that allows consumers to ask the company that issued the credit card they used to pay for an online purchase to cancel the amounts and fees charged to the card. What are the steps involved?

Cancel contract

Before you can request a chargeback, you must cancel the contract with the merchant directly. To find out how to do this, and what the applicable deadlines are, consult our information sheet on this subject.

No solution or no return from the merchant?

Contact your credit card company to request a chargeback of your purchase. The Consumer Protection Act requires that the chargeback request be made in writing (registered mail, e-mail) and contain mandatory information.

Following the 15-day period the merchant has to reimburse you, you have 60 days to make your chargeback request. It's interesting to note that when the amounts involved are small, credit card issuers often agree to reimburse the consumer after a simple phone call.

Keep proof of your efforts

If possible, have proof of your efforts to resolve the problem with the merchant, the date of purchase and the date you contacted the merchant to resolve the problem. These documents will come in very handy!
