Option consommateurs accuses these companies of conspiring to unduly restrict competition in connection with the production, supply or sale of beef in Quebec. For the purposes of this class action, beef is defined as meat intended for human consumption and produced, in particular, by the activities of these companies.
Which companies are involved?
Option consommateurs has launched a class action against the following companies Cargill, Inc, Cargill Meat Solutions Corp, Cargill Ltd, JBS USA Food Company, Swift Beef Company, JBS Packerland Inc, JBS Canada ULC, Tyson Foods, Inc, Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc, National Beef packing Company, LLC, dubbed the "beef cartel" in the media.
Description
The class action seeks a judgment ordering the repayment of revenues generated by the artificially inflated portion of beef sales prices purchased in Quebec.

You could be affected by this class action if you purchased beef in Quebec on or after January1, 2015.
Where are we now ?
Canada-wide settlement agreements have been concluded with JBS USA Food Company, JBS Packerland Inc., JBS Canada ULC, and Swift Beef Company, as well as with National Beef Packing.
The class-action lawsuit, however, continues against the other two groups of companies named in the suit: Cargill, Inc., Cargill Meat Solutions Corp., Cargill Ltd., as well as Tyson Foods, Inc. and Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc.
The settlement agreements provide for the payment of a total of $7,993,700, as well as the cooperation of the signatory companies in pursuing the action against the two other corporate groups that did not participate in the settlements.
The settlement agreements will be submitted for approval by the Superior Court on December 1, 2026, at the Montreal Courthouse.
Potential class members who wish to opt out of the class actions must do so by August 7, 2026. Those who wish to submit comments or objections to the settlement agreement are required to do so in writing to the attorneys leading the class action no later than November 30, 2026.
