Exploratory consultation on a Children’s privacy code

Option consommateurs supports the initiative to adopt a Children’s privacy code, as proposed by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada in its consultation. In our opinion, this code should have broad application in order to protect all Canadian children using products and services in the digital environment.

We have a few recommendations for the content of a future Children’s privacy code.

First, this code should stipulate that all decisions concerning the processing of children's personal information be based on the principle of the best interests of the child.

Second, children should be guaranteed a high level of privacy protection.

Furthermore, the use of children's personal information for commercial profiling purposes should be prohibited.

Information about the processing of children's personal information should be presented to them in clear and appropriate language.

Children should also be able to exercise their rights and recourses on their own.

Finally, a right to be forgotten should be established.

Your child’s first birthday, the start of the last school year, family vacations—as a parent, it’s nice to share the latest news about your kids or their achievements. Sadly, doing so on social media can expose them to risks that are often hidden, as personal information, photos, and video could harm their reputations in later life or be used by malicious people for child porn or identity theft.
