On October 5, 2017, the Quebec government submitted Bill 141: An Act primarily to improve the supervision of the financial sector, the protection of deposits of money and the operating regime of financial institutions.

Option consommateurs has serious concerns about the proposed amendments, which represent a fundamental step backwards in the supervision of this sector. These loopholes will undermine consumer protection in a sector where they are vulnerable.

This page lists several articles on Bill 141 andOption consommateurs 's contributions to the issue.

A petition opposing Bill 141 has been posted on the Quebec National Assembly website.

. Withdrawal of Bill 141 - Quebec consumer associations form a movement for the immediate withdrawal of Bill 141

The Coalition des associations de consommateurs du Québec (CACQ), Option consommateurs and Union des consommateurs are speaking with one voice to the National Assembly, the government and the Minister of Finance, the Honourable Carlos J. Leitão, to call for the withdrawal of Bill 141, and they invite all stakeholders who share their concern to join them in this request.

On the eve of the adoption of Bill 141, a survey reveals several data that do not reassure CHAD and CSF as well asOption consommateurs:
  • Nearly half of Quebecers are unaware of all the exclusions in their insurance contracts
  • 80% of consumers don't read their contracts, or only read part of them, which can lead to nasty surprises when it comes to making a claim.
  •  Only 19% of Quebecers are aware that sewer backup is not a basic coverage in home insurance policies, and 76% of respondents were unaware that recurring headaches can affect their life insurance coverage.
