Food, banking, telecommunications: how can we promote competition in these sectors and help consumers get better prices?

The lack of competition in many markets has been particularly noticeable in recent months, especially in the food sector, but also in banking and telecommunications. How is this concentration of companies hurting consumers? What should the government do to promote competition and give consumers more choice?

Panelists

Jennifer Quaid 

Jennifer A Quaid, B Soc Sci (Econ) (Ottawa), LL.L/LL.B. (Ottawa), LLM (Cantab), LLM (Columbia), PhD (Queen's), is Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the Civil Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, where she teaches criminal, competition and business law.

 

 

Carlos Castiblanco

Carlos Castiblanco is an economist with a Master's degree in Economics from the Université de Montréal and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the National University of Colombia. With over two years' professional experience in economics and financial services, he is passionate about economic analysis and econometrics. Mr. Castiblanco has just developed a model to identify the main components of food inflation in Canada.

JoAnne Labrecque 

After working as a senior marketing analyst at CROP and SECOR, JoAnne Labrecque (MBA, Ph.D. Cornell) is now a marketing professor at HEC Montréal. Her research focuses on various topics related to product category management, the value chain, sustainable development, and the analysis of consumer behavior towards various food categories and health perceptions. She is the author of several expert reports and a member of various boards of directors in the food and retail sectors.
