OC v. Léon, Brick, Groupe BMTC and Ameublements Tanguay (advertising on financing plans)

Description

In February 2020, Option consommateurs filed an application for authorization to exercise a class action, formerly known as a class action, against Meubles Léon, Brick, Brault et Martineau, ÉconoMax and Ameublements Tanguay. We accuse these companies of advertising financing plans in violation of the Consumer Protection Act.

Our members

Anyone who has purchased a good or service in Quebec from Léon, Brick, Brault et Martineau, Ameublements Tanguay or ÉconoMax through a "Buy Now, Pay Later" financing program between February 27, 2017 and December 31, 2020 inclusively.

Where we are

The companies sued agreed to modify their advertising on the financing plans they offer in order to comply with certain sections of the Consumer Protection Act.

An out-of-court settlement has been reached with all these companies. This agreement provides for the payment of a total sum of $1,450,000 to the members of the group. As it was agreed that distribution of this sum to each member would be impractical and too costly, it was agreed that this sum (less lawyers' fees and the amount owed to the Fonds d'aide aux class actions) would be paid to the Fondation pour les consommateurs.

The distribution of sums is now complete.
