Bill no. 59 (Option consommateurs' comments)
Option consommateurs is in favor of implementing the recommendations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to combat tax base erosion and profit shifting. It urges the government to apply these measures in a way that preserves consumers' interests.
Option consommateurs presents its comments on Bill C-59 - An Act to implement certain provisions of the fall economic statement tabled in Parliament on November 21, 2023 and certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on March 28, 2023.
It supports tax initiatives to help Canadian households, particularly by facilitating access to housing. An analysis of these
recommendations is presented in section 1.
It also generally supports the proposed amendments to the Competition Act, but suggests additional measures. In particular, the bill should provide for a more robust right to redress to better protect consumers. We also suggest the inclusion of certain presumptions when considering mergers.
Our comments on the proposed amendments to the Competition Act can be found in section 2 of this brief.
