Access to justice: a real challenge for our society based on the rule of law

For the Chambre des notaires, protection of the public begins with direct access to relevant and complete information on subjects affecting notarial practice.

Whether assisting people in their search for answers to their legal needs, or informing and raising awareness among citizens of their rights and obligations, the Ordre des notaires advocates a preventive and collaborative approach.

Indeed, Quebecers cannot always assess the legal implications of their decisions for themselves. The Chamber has therefore set up a number of initiatives to enable people with limited financial capacity to receive the services they need to defend their rights.

These include 1-800-NOTAIRE, a free service set up by the Chambre des notaires du Québec to provide Quebecers with easy, free access to front-line legal information. 1-800-NOTAIRE puts citizens in touch with experienced notaries who have worked in many areas of notarial law. These jurists provide information on the nature of their rights and guide them towards solutions that meet their needs.

The Chamber writes several legal columns dealing with various points of law for magazines that are in line with the Order's mission, including Protégez-vous, le Bel Âge and Immigrant Québec. In 2018, she launched the Citizens' Commission on Family Law to reach out to organizations and citizens wishing to have their say on the issue and provide food for thought for legislators on the subject.

She also provides support to a variety of legal professionals to improve their understanding of the legal issues and risks associated with a current or future situation. It is the partner of the Clinique juridique Juripop for the Mois de la justice and the Caravane des aînées. The Chamber is also a founding member of Éducaloi, a partner of the Clinique juridique de l'Outaouais. It is also involved in many other organizations, such as the Institut pacifique.

Access to justice is an important issue. As members of the legal community, we all have a role to play in improving this accessibility, and must work together to find innovative formulas that will improve the way we work!

For this reason, the Chambre des notaires was delighted to join Option consommateurs as a major partner in its fundraising evening on March 21. We hope that our contribution will enable the organization to promote and defend the interests of consumers, while ensuring that they are respected.
