Desjardins Financial Security Cancer Protection Premium
The claims period is opened as part of an agreement reached in a class action.
Montreal, [October 26, 2023] - The claims period is open following a settlement reached between Option consommateurs and Desjardins Financial Security (" DFS ") in a class action concerning the addition of cancer diagnosis coverage (the " Cancer Protection ") to Desjardins members' savings life insurance without their consent.
More specifically, Option consommateurs is criticizing DFS for adding Cancer Protection to Desjardins members' savings life insurance on June1, 2016, and for increasing their premiums without asking for their consent.
As part of the agreement, DFS will refund premiums collected for Cancer Protection between June1, 2016 and November 24, 2023 to eligible individuals who file a claim. DFS is also committed to donating $3 million to charitable organizations, after payment of disbursements and a portion of attorneys' fees.
To be eligible, you must have taken out savings life insurance before June1, 2016, have paid the Cancer Protection premiums and not have filed a claim under this coverage. In addition, you must not have benefited from the measures proposed by DFS in December 2017, and you must indicate why. Finally, you must waive Cancer Protection.
If you receive compensation, Cancer Protection will be automatically withdrawn from your savings life insurance and you will no longer pay the premium.
To take effect, the agreement must first be approved by the Court. Monies will be distributed once the agreement has been approved. However, those who believe they are eligible for compensation can now go to www.ey.com/ca/protection-cancer to complete the claim form.
