Online service subscription - What you need to know

To attract customers, some companies offer their subscriptions in the form of opt-out subscriptions: consumers benefit from a free or discounted trial period, and are then automatically subscribed to the full-price service. What should I consider when subscribing to these products and services?

The law does not prohibit this kind of practice, as long as the consumer has agreed from the outset to benefit from a free or reduced-price period and to be billed automatically at the regular price thereafter. For example, if the merchant clearly states that the first month is free and that subsequent months will be billed at $10, the practice poses no problem. On the other hand, if this information is not mentioned from the outset, the practice may indeed be illegal. In such a case, the consumer can contact the Office de la protection du consommateur.
